National Aeronautics and Space Administrion

Since its inception in 1958, NASA has accomplished many great scientific and technological feats in air and space. NASA technology also has been adapted for many nonaerospace uses by the private sector. NASA remains a leading force in scientific research and in stimulating public interest in aerospace exploration, as well as science and technology in general. Perhaps more importantly, our exploration of space has taught us to view Earth, ourselves, and the universe in a new way. While the tremendous technical and scientific accomplishments of NASA demonstrate vividly that humans can achieve previously inconceivable feats, we also are humbled by the realization that Earth is just a tiny "blue marble" in the cosmos. Check out our "Thinking About NASA History" folder online as an introduction to how history can help you.

Wheelchair in Space

"The flight took place on Saturday morning, when a Blue Origin New Shepard capsule lifted off from the company’s launch site near Van Horn, Texas."https://interestingengineering.com/space/first-wheelchair-user-to-reach-space?utm_source=join1440&utm_medium=email&utm_placement=newsletter&user_id=66c4c92f5d78644b3ac5d5b4

Galaxy Collision

"Our galaxy will collide with Andromeda Galaxy in about 5 billion years. Some astronomers refer to our two galaxy as a binary system of giant spirals."https://space-facts.com/galaxies/milky-way/

Elements of Milky Way

"The stars, gas and dust of the Milky Way all orbit the centre at a rate of about 220 kilometres per second. This constant rate for all stars at different distances from the core implies the existence of a shell of dark matter surrounding our galaxy."https://space-facts.com/galaxies/milky-way/

Supermassive blackhole

"The Milky Way’s central core contains a supermassive black hole. It is commonly referred to as Sagittarius A*. It contains the mass of about 4.3 million Suns."https://space-facts.com/galaxies/milky-way/

Globular clusters

"The Milky Way began as a series of dense regions in the early universe not long after the Big Bang. The first stars to form were in globular clusters that still exist. They are among the oldest stars formed in the Milky Way region."https://space-facts.com/galaxies/milky-way/

Cosmic Map

"Launched in March, NASA’s SPHEREx space telescope has completed its first infrared map of the entire sky in 102 colors. While not visible to the human eye, these 102 infrared wavelengths of light are prevalent in the cosmos, and observing the entire sky this way enables scientists to answer big questions, including how a dramatic event that occurred in the first billionth of a trillionth of a trillionth of a second after the big bang influenced the 3D distribution of hundreds of millions of galaxies in our universe."https://www.jpl.nasa.gov/news/nasas-spherex-observatory-completes-first-cosmic-map-like-no-other/?utm_source=iContact&utm_medium=email&utm_campaign=1-nasajpl&utm_content=spherex20251218

Mars Rover

"After nearly five years on Mars, NASA’s Perseverance rover has traveled almost 25 miles (40 kilometers), and the mission team has been busy testing the rover’s durability and gathering new science findings on the way to a new region nicknamed “Lac de Charmes,” where it will be searching for rocks to sample in the coming year."https://www.jpl.nasa.gov/news/nasas-perseverance-mars-rover-ready-to-roll-for-miles-in-years-ahead/?utm_source=iContact&utm_medium=email&utm_campaign=1-nasajpl&utm_content=perseverance20251217

Kilonova

"So far, only one kilonova has been unambiguously confirmed to date, a historic event known as GW170817, which took place in 2017."

Future Commercial Spaceflight

"The same historic facilities that some 50 years ago prepared NASA’s twin Voyager probes for their ongoing interstellar odyssey are helping to ready a towering commercial spacecraft for a journey to the Moon."

James Webb Discovery

"Two icons of discovery, NASA’s James Webb Space Telescope and NASA’s Curiosity rover, have earned places in TIME’s “Best Inventions Hall of Fame,” which recognizes the 25 groundbreaking inventions of the past quarter century that have had the most global impact, since TIME began its annual Best Inventions list in 2000."https://www.jpl.nasa.gov/news/nasas-webb-curiosity-named-in-times-best-inventions-hall-of-fame/?utm_source=iContact&utm_medium=email&utm_campaign=1-nasajpl&utm_content=tech20251215

Rover Operation

"NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Southern California on Wednesday inaugurated its Rover Operations Center (ROC), a center of excellence for current and future surface missions to the Moon and Mars."https://www.jpl.nasa.gov/news/nasa-jpl-unveils-rover-operations-center-for-moon-mars-missions/?utm_source=iContact&utm_medium=email&utm_campaign=1-nasajpl&utm_content=roc20251210

Mars Dust storms

"Scientists have theorized for decades that there could be lightning on Mars. And now, NASA’s Perseverance rover has finally gathered direct evidence of electrical sparks in Martian dust storms and dust devils."https://earthsky.org/space/lightning-on-mars-dust-storms-dust-devils-perseverance-rover/?mc_cid=24eba3abfd&mc_eid=7fad6b6067

NASA sensor

"Cradled in the nose of a high-altitude research airplane, a new NASA sensor has taken to the skies to help geoscientists map rocks hosting lithium and other critical minerals on Earth’s surface some 60,000 feet below."https://www.jpl.nasa.gov/news/new-nasa-sensor-goes-hunting-for-critical-minerals/?utm_source=iContact&utm_medium=email&utm_campaign=1-nasajpl&utm_content=aviris520251209
